On July 27, 2023, the American Civil Liberties Union, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Center for Constitutional Rights, and Brennan Center for Justice sent a letter to Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas voicing deep concern about the Department of Homeland Security's “domestic violent extremism” label, standards for collecting and disseminating information to state and local law enforcement agencies, and the impacts this can have particularly on disparately surveilled and policed communities.
