Ahhh the frustration!
Apparently Congressman Ben Chandler's staff disagrees with the hundreds of activists from across the country who an hour ago chanted "no new restrictions!" I just met with two members of his staff and simply asked, "How can a supposedly pro-choice member of Congress vote for the Stupak-Pitts amendment?" They contend that the studies they have read prove Stupak is merely a continuation of the Hyde Amendment. Just keeping the status quo. When I asked what studies the congressman based his vote on, they wouldn't answer. They assured me they had read studies from both sides of this debate, but appreciated my understanding and view of the ramifications of Stupak.
My final question was whether he would reconsider his vote during conference. I received the wonderful political response: all the information will be reviewed before the congressman makes the decision.
Apparently the congressman will continue to gather information from both sides, while ignoring his constituents and the real world consequences of his vote for millions of women.
