ACLU Applauds Biden Administration for Canceling for Student Debt
WASHINGTON — President Biden used executive authority today to cancel up to $20,000 in federal student loan debt for Pell Grant borrowers and $10,000 if you didn’t receive Pell Grants. Currently, more than 40 million Americans hold more than $1.6 trillion in federal student loan debt.
The following comment is from Carlos Moreno, ACLU senior campaign strategist:
“We commend President Biden for upholding his promise to cancel student debt. Millions of Americans are impacted by the student debt crisis, and this debt burden falls heaviest on Black Americans — especially Black women. Student debt cancellation will help secure financial stability and mobility for people of color — particularly Black Americans — who are disproportionately burdened with student debt while providing immediate financial relief and peace of mind for millions of Americans.”
