ACLU Comment on Today’s Federal Court Family Reunification Hearing
SAN DIEGO — The American Civil Liberties Union was back in federal court today pushing for the reunification of children under 5 who were forcibly separated from their parents.
Under court order, the Trump administration provided a list of names over the weekend of 102 separated children under 5. At today’s hearing, the Trump administration said just over 50 children would be reunited by tomorrow’s deadline.
The ACLU won a June 26 preliminary injunction requiring reunification of children under 5 within 14 days, and all children within 30 days. U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw held status conferences on Friday, today, and will again tomorrow to track reunification progress.
Lee Gelernt, deputy director of the ACLU’s Immigrants’ Rights Project, said:
“The court is holding the Trump administration’s feet to the fire to get these kids reunited with their parents. That’s the most important thing. It’s extremely disappointing the government will not be in full compliance with the court order, but the judge has stepped in to manage this mess of the administration’s making.”
