ACLU Comment on Trump Administration’s Family Separation Blame Game
NEW YORK — Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar held a media briefing today on the actions taken to reunite thousands of children with parents following the district court’s order in the ACLU’s class-action lawsuit, calling the deadlines “artificial.”
Lee Gelernt, deputy director of the ACLU’s Immigrants’ Rights Project, had this reaction:
"The Trump administration's attempt to shift the blame to the court is incomprehensible given how much time the court gave the government to fix its own mess.
“When the government wants to marshal its resources to separate families, it has shown that it can do it quickly and efficiently, but when told to reunite families, it somehow finds it too difficult and cumbersome to accomplish.”
U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw will hold a status conference tomorrow at noon PT/3 p.m. ET.
