WASHINGTON — The US House Foreign Affairs Committee voted on Wednesday to advance a bill that would effectively ban TikTok in the US, violating the First Amendment rights of millions of Americans who use the app to communicate and express themselves daily. Earlier this week, the ACLU wrote a letter to HFAC outlining all of the constitutional concerns with the bill. The version passed out of committee today did not address any of those concerns.

Jenna Leventoff, senior policy counsel at ACLU, issued the following statement:

“We’re disappointed that the House Foreign Affairs Committee voted to approve a bill that would effectively ban TikTok in the United States, in violation of Americans’ First Amendment rights. We urge legislators to vote no on this vague, overbroad, and unconstitutional bill.”
