WASHINGTON — The American Civil Liberties Union commends Vice President Kamala Harris’ remarks in Atlanta today for highlighting the necessity to pass federal protections for abortion in the wake of reporting in ProPublica that two women had died as result of Georgia’s abortion ban. In response, Deirdre Schifeling, ACLU Chief Political and Advocacy Officer, released the following statement:

“If elected, Vice President Harris has publicly committed to work with Congress to enact federal legislation to ensure every American in every state can access abortion care when they need it. Every day, we witness the devastating impacts of the overturning of Roe v. Wade, which has exponentially exacerbated the barriers created by the erosion of abortion access over previous decades, resulting in tragic and preventable health complications and deaths — including the deaths of two Georgia women who were blocked from receiving the essential healthcare they desperately needed. We need bold and urgent action to put an end to the enormous harms unleashed by extreme bans and secure federal abortion rights and access for all. Regardless of who is president, the ACLU will continue to advocate and fight to secure the right to abortion across the country.”
